History -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. What is WINEDT? ================== WINEDT 95 [Release 1.d] is a state of the art text editor and project manager for Windows 95. WINEDT 95 can be used to edit HUGE text files. The user can open many files at once and can switch between them using the Window Menu or Ctrl+Tab switch. WINEDT uses a Multiple Documents Interface (MDI) and follows or extends Windows' Standards in every respect. WINEDT 95 supports (LaTeX) Syntax Highlighting and Input/Output ASCII Code Translation Tables. WINEDT comes with a comprehensive, Context-Sensitive Help. WINEDT 95 can be customized to run with different utilities and is particularly suitable for writing TeX documents. WINEDT allows the user to install DOS and Windows Applications and activate them by using a Menu Command or a Tool Bar Button. Furthermore, WINEDT can pass currently opened files as parameters, making sure that changes are automatically saved before the files are compiled. After defining utilities (such as TeX, LaTeX, BibTeX, DVI Driver, Spell Checker), most of the common tasks while writing a TeX document or a project is reduced to clicking a Tool Bar Button or selecting a Menu Command. WINEDT is suitable for writing papers, theses or books, using a simple but efficient strategy to manage projects. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Upgrading WINEDT 95 ====================== If you customized WINEDT to run on your system you should save your modified initialization files and then compare them with the files included in this distribution. The section on History of WINEDT describes the changes and the file "winedt.dat" contains examples on how to modify certain parameters. You will have to modify the group "%Options:" that requires two new parameters. Also, the group "%Font:" has a few added parameters that allow a wider selection of fonts. You may also want to add the group "%Highlighting:" in your initialization files. The latest release allows you to rename the Main Menu Items in the "%Menu:" group. You can also define Input/Output ASCII translation tables in "%Input:" and "%Output:" parameter groups. (see "winedt.dat" for more details). If you are a registered user of WINEDT 95 please remember your Registration Code because you will have to enter your registration data again. You can see your registration number in Help / Register Dialog. See the Section on WINEDT's History for a list of new features added in this release. Read also the instructions in the next section! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Installing WINEDT 95 ======================= (a) The following files are down-loaded and unzipped from ftp.borland.com pub/techinfo/techdocs.../*.zip (courtesy of Borland International, Inc.) and are included in this package for your convenience: bwcc.dll - Borland Library (loaded by WINEDT) borte1.fon - BorlandTE Font Library (recommended) You can move these two files to WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory or else leave the file "bwcc.dll" in the same directory as "winedt.exe". If you already have a version of BWCC.DLL you can decide whether to replace it or not (depending on the version). If you are developing software with BWCC.DLL, please download the original package (pub/techinfo/techdocs/language/c++/bcpp/bwcc.zip) and read the instructions before replacing BWCC.DLL. BorTE family is an excellent choice as an OEM font for WINEDT. If you want WINEDT to use this font you should first install it: Settings / Control Panel / Font ... The file borte1.fon (pub/techinfo/techdocs/other/misc/borte1.zip) is provided for this purpose. You are encouraged to install and use BorTE Font with WINEDT 95. In the absence of this font WINEDT uses the default Fixed Font on your system. See the group "%Font:" in the file "winedt.dat" for more details concerning the installation of fonts to be used with WINEDT 95. The initialization files included in this distribution define BorTE as a font used in the status line and editing window. If you decide not to install this font on your system you have to remove this definition from the initialization files in order to avoid warning messages during the initialization. If the fonts definition is absent WINEDT uses a default OEM font on your system. (b) Create a directory and move the following files into it: winedt.exe - [Essential] WINEDT Executable winedt.hlp - [Essential] WINEDT Help winedt.wed - [Essential] WINEDT Registration Data (Binary) winedt.ini - [Essential] Plain Mode Initialization File winedt.txt - Important Text to Read about WINEDT winedt.dat - Examples for customizing WINEDT wedtxt.ini - Text Mode Initialization File wedtex.ini - TeX Mode Initialization File (c) The following files can be placed anywhere: 0readme.txt - This File erase.bat - DOS Command File: Erase *.TMP and *.BAK Files (Sample) erase.pif - PIF File to run erase.bat in a DOS WINDOW (Sample) tex.bat - DOS Command File that runs TeX (Sample) tex.pif - PIF File to run tex.bat in a DOS WINDOW (Sample) wedcol.exe - A simple utility to help you customize the colors for selection modes and syntax highlighting wedcol.pas - Pascal Source for "wedcol.exe" ascii.txt - A file containig all ASCII characters [#0..#255] (usefull for setting up I/O Translation Tables) The ".BAT" and ".PIF" files are provided as Samples for how to run DOS Utilities with WINEDT 95. More about that later... (See: "winedt.txt") (d) You can install WINEDT by creating a shortcut in one of the Programs Groups. Windows Explorer is a tool for creating and maintaining shortcuts as well as associating applications with certain file types. More about that later... (See: "winedt.txt") You may decide to try WINEDT before installing the program. In that case you can activate the program using your favorite Windows 95 method to start an application (for example: Run... or Windows Explorer...).
